Not So Sick Kid

Jaquelyn is home from school today slightly ill. She's not doing terribly but I figured I would save the frustration of her being sent home and just keep her here. She woke up with a 102.5 fever at about 5am and I gave her some ibuprofen. Amazingly enough, that has been it for the fever, it never came back. She has been coughing on and off but not too badly. She probably picked it up from Rebecca who was running about the same on Sunday but she's fine now and didn't even miss school since her fever was gone quickly also.
Let's hope that all their illnesses are this harmless this winter.

Hope Jaquelyn feels better soon.

I will be more than happy to answer your question (no it was not intrusive). Hope you do not mind if I do it here.

The general rule is that EVERYONE over Bat Mitzvah (12 year old girl) and Bar Mitzvah (13 year old boy) must fast. (We have other fast days that are rather lenient, but Yom Kippur happens to be the biggie). That being said, The opposite extreme rule is that if it is detrimental to someone's health, well being or life, they absolutely DO NOT have to fast. But there are nuances in between the two extremes.

My friend's hubby is diabetic and he was told it is a more important component of Yom Kippur to fast than to be at Synagogue all day - so he should stay home and TRY to fast. Of course he still checks his blood sugar and if it got too low requiring food, he would absolutely be allowed to eat - no one is to put their life in danger.

Pregnant and nursing women fast on a case by case basis. Each one should ask their personal Rabbi and he will "suggest" what you should do based on your situation and where you r in pregnancy and nursing.

But not fasting does not = eating whatever and however you want.

Last year I was early in my pregnancy and was told I could drink liquid the size of a shot glass every 15 minutes. When I was pregnant with So, I was actually overdue, so since I could go into labor any minute, I am allowed to be energized, so I was told I could eat solids less than 3 ounces every 15 minutes. A woman who is in labor or JUST had a baby can eat whatever and however she wants. A nursing woman has to ask these questions as well.

Elderly and really ill people also may be given leeway.

G-d does NOT have us do anything that might jeopardize our lives, but we are sometimes stronger than we think. The bottom line is, each case is evaluated, but most people do just fine fasting for 24 hours.
